About Mallory

For flutist Mallory Deneau, every piece of music holds a story waiting to be told.

Mallory is pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance at CU Boulder, where she performs with the CU Symphonic Band. Some of her training includes a masterclass with renowned flutist Carol Wincenc and performance experience with the Denver Young Artists Orchestra. In 2025, Mallory was named the Boulder Area Music Teachers Association's (BAMTA) Most Outstanding Graduating Senior, recognizing her achievement in music.

Mallory brings a distinct interpretive lens to every performance. She approaches music not as pure performance, but as storytelling. Audiences can expect playing that draws out the characters embedded in a melodic line, the tension and release of a phrase, and the wit hidden in a fast passage. She honors the composer's intent but seeks to include her own spirit, searching for a place where the score and her own artistry can meet. Her artistic abilities were first nurtured by her high school flute teacher, Malia Van Rooy, whose guidance convinced Mallory that music was her passion, something she was meant to pursue. Now at CU Boulder, Mallory’s musicality and abilities have continued to blossom under mentorship from Christina Jennings.

This December, that mentorship takes on a new shape as Mallory explores the world of chamber music. She will join Professor Jennings and two close colleagues to perform Jessie Montgomery’s Passacaglia as part of a recital celebrating Montgomery’s visit to CU’s campus, serving as a chance to bring her storytelling instincts to a quartet stage.
